Students & Young People

Schools Screenings

Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival is proud to work with young students and filmmakers. As part of the 2016 Festival, BFMAF held three schools screenings for local first, middle and high school children and young people.

Young Filmmakers' Awards

In 2016, the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival's Young Filmmakers Competition returned for its ninth year. The prestigious prize aims to encourage and support budding young filmmakers in our region through two separate competition streams.

The Chris Anderson Award (for filmmakers 15-19 years old)

This competition commemorates the life of Chris Anderson, who was an active supporter of our Festival and of developing skills in young filmmakers. The Award is kindly supported by his widow, Chrissie Anderson, and son, Paul W.S. Anderson, director of Resident Evil and Alien vs. Predator.

The winner of the 2016 Chris Anderson Award was Limbo by Roisin Kennan, Sophie Gregan and Lewis Pasola.

Young Filmmakers Award (for filmmakers 14 years and under)

Young people aged 14 years old and under are invited to submit their short films to compete for the Young Filmmakers Award and a cash prize of £250.

Last year's Young Filmmaker Award went to Izzy Gale, Stephanie Cartledge and Jessica Hawkins for their short film, Escape.

All shortlisted films are shown on the big screen during the Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival. The Young Filmmakers Competition is open to schools, colleges, youth groups and individuals, and is free to enter.

Arts Award Supporter

Our Arts Award Supporter role offers varied opportunities for young people to participate in our film festival. During the festival we present a youth programme that provides opportunities to:

  • attend screenings of new films,
  • attend related workshops,
  • participate in post film Q&As with film directors and artists talks,
  • volunteer with us - there are various roles across the festival for people 16 years and over.
  • there is also the opportunity to see your films on the big screen at a public screening through our Young Filmmakers Competition.

Our Arts Award Supporter offer is particularly relevant for developing your Bronze, Silver or Gold Arts Awards portfolios. Look out for the Arts Award Supporter badge for relevant activities.
