Our Programme for Youth!
The Festival weekend begins with a showing of a new feature length Moomins adventure in the Maltings on Saturday 24th September, and will be followed by an all-day workshop, Unravel: The Longest Hand-painted Film in Britain, which invites young and old to get creative; drawing, painting and scratching directly into 16mm film cells. That afternoon also brings a screening of the beautifully hand-painted animation Arrietty, based on the children's book 'The Borrowers' by Mary Norton and adapted by the producers behind Spirited Away.
As well as encouraging young people to engage with cultural films, the Festival supports filmmaking too. Many young filmmakers from the North East & Scottish Borders entered their shorts into our Chris Anderson Award over the Summer and the Festival is your opportunity to watch the short listed selection, to discover the talent of tomorrow, and to find out who wins!
And on Sunday 25th, the Festival offers another opportunity for children’s imaginations to run wild with a stop-motion Animation Workshop in Dewar’s Lane Granary, as well as showing the award-winning fairy tale animation Azur & Asmar: The Princes' Quest, based on the legendary ‘Arabian Nights’.
Another workshop that afternoon offers an insight into the workings of The Ice Book – a pop-up miniature theatre performance of light and shadow, mystery and intrigue. The workshop offers the opportunity for children aged 10+ to create their own story using the latest in green screen technology!
