Film Commissions

Film Commissions

The 6th Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival has had an unprecedented response to its call out in June for commission proposals for an artist or film-maker to make a new piece of moving image work, and ‘Film Score’ for a musician or composer to write and perform a new soundtrack to an existing film or films of their choice.

Organisers were overwhelmed when hundreds of proposals flooded in from the length and breadth of the UK as well from the US, Germany, Italy and other countries.

Proposals were submitted from renowned names from the world of film and art and after tough competition the final chosen commissions are from:

Mat Fleming – from the North East Mat has been making films since he was 18 and has a special enthusiasmfor 8mm and 16mm film. In 2001 he cofounded Cineside which became the Side Cinema and then Star and Shadow Cinema collective.

People Like Us & Ergo Phizmiz, Since 1991 British artist Vicki Bennett working under the name People Like US has been an influential figure in the field of audio visual collage. Ergo's most recent productions are the new album "Things to Do and Make" on Care in the Community Recordings, and the contemporary opera about radio, magic and death "The Mourning Show". People Like Us have previously shown work at Tate Modern, Sydney Opera House, Pompidou Centre and Sonar, and performed radio sessions for John Peel and Mixing It.

Corine Sworn - practice examines shifting ideals and understandings from one period in history to another. Sworn examines these themes through the production of objects, ephemera and films. These films use various historical events and understandings to construct loose narratives that wander among fragments of the past. Through the use of appropriation much of her work is built from these ‘fragments’.

BJ Nilsen - is a Swedish sound and recording artist. Primarily focused on the
sound of nature and its effect on humans, field recordings and the perception of time and space as experienced through sound, often electronically treated.Nilsen has created worked for documentary film, television and sound designer.     He has collaborated with, among others, Chris Watson, Christian Fennesz,
Stilluppsteypa, Hildur Gudnadottir, Z’ev, Finnbogi Pétursson, Ingólfur Arnarsson,
Semiconductor, Brandon La Belle, Phillip Jeck and Jon Wozencroft.

Says Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival Curator/Producer for the commissions Iain Pate:

“We’re delighted by the response we've had. The Arts Council funded
commissions enable the festival to continue to support artists to make and
present new works in Berwick. With such a broad range of ideas and high
quality of submissions it wasn’t an easy task, but we’ve selected
outstanding works for commission and we’re sure they’ll enthrall this
year’s festival audience.”
The chosen works will be presented as part of the Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival, 2010 from 15th to 19th September in Berwick-upon-Tweed. A number of unique venues will be used for presentation of the commissions.

The main Festival is a biennale, which since its inaugural event in 2005, has taken place in September. During the alternate years, a smaller scale ‘Mini-Fest’ is also held over a weekend between September – November.

The sixth edition returns this year on Wednesday 15 – Sunday 19 September, for five days packed with film premieres, cult classics, innovative artists’ video installations and parties.
This year’s festival – Stagings - will explore the notion of performance on film, and the function of the screen as a stage.
