Danny Leigh coming to town!
With exactly four weeks to go until the Festival, we’re delighted to announce a special guest to Berwick. Danny Leigh, presenter of the BBC’s Film Programme, will be in town on Friday 27th September to introduce Drifters as part of a special event.
John Grierson’s classic will be screened as part of a live performance with a newly commissioned score from Mercury Prize-nominees Field Music. Field Music will perform live to Drifters at The Maltings Theatre & Cinema, following an introduction to the film by Danny Leigh and a presentation of Grierson’s short film, Granton Trawler.
Danny Leigh is a film critic, journalist, novelist and co-host of the BBC’s Film Programme since 2011. He has written about film extensively for The Guardian, and for a range of other newspapers and magazines.
Danny said he's be honoured to introduce Drifters, saying he loves the film and describing it as “incredibly powerful.” This seminal silent documentary follows the working day of a herring fishing fleet as they set sail from the Shetland Islands to battle the elements of the North Sea fishing grounds. Grierson was a pioneering Scottish filmmaker known for coining the term ‘documentary.’
The event forms part of the Festival’s 2013 programme – a series of film premieres, site-specific installations and new commissioned themed around North by Northeast – looking at Berwick’s relationship to Northern Europe and to the North Sea.
Danny is a self-confessed “Scandi wannabe” (long before The Killing too!), saying our North by Northeast programme is “right up my street.”
Tickets are on sale for only £8 online, and from The Maltings Theatre & Cinema box office on 01289 330999.
The Drifters event is sponsored by Simpsons Malt, while the new commission has been supported by PRS For Music Foundation and Arts Council England.
