Now that we’re into the New Year, and you’ve got your 2013 diaries, we’re pleased to announce the dates of our 9th edition: Wednesday 25th – Sunday 29th September!
The Festival will return 25th – 29th September to once again transform the town of Berwick into one big cinema screen through film premieres, site-specific installations and live events in locations across Berwick and along the town walls.
This year, we’ll be facing North by Northeast, exploring Berwick’s Nordic roots, and our region’s historical and cultural links with Northern Europe, and the North Sea that connects us.
As part of what is sure to be our most ambitious programme to date, we look forward to bringing filmmakers and artists from around the North Sea rim here to Berwick-upon-Tweed, and are already in the process of commissioning new work especially for Berwick, and which will go on to tour overseas.
Last year was a blast, with over 50 films screened and projected in 9 venues and 7 outdoor locations around the town. We welcomed 32 professional filmmakers and artists to Berwick from all over the world, including the famous filmmaker and critic Mark Cousins, who described the programme as “beautifully curated.”
The 2012 Festival attracted an influx of visitors, with 7,000 admissions altogether, including 350 young participants – and this year we’re set to attract even more.
Since September, one of our new commissions A Live Road Movie, by Screen Bandita and the One Ensemble, has gone on to tour to Aberdeenshire and to London Short Film Festival, while another new commission, Photographers, by Mishka Henner and David Oates, has racked up over 33,000 views online. Meanwhile, I Am Nasrine, a film which received its world premiere at our 2011 edition has been nominated for a BAFTA for debut director Tina Gharavi.
With last year’s Festival resulting in Berwick’s B&B’s “selling out,” we really do recommend you book early. Click here for information on local accommodation, or call Berwick Tourist Information Centre on +44 (0)1289 301 780.
The 2013 programme will go live mid-August. Meanwhile, watch this space, and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
