We are open for entries!

We are delighted to launch our open call for entries, asking artists and filmmakers to submit films and moving image work responding to the theme of X.

Spanning 12 locations in North East England’s walled border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, the 12th Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, which takes place this year from Wednesday 21st to Sunday 25th September 2016, is an international celebration of the art of film, sourced not only from specially commissioned work, but from this open call.

The 24th letter in the Latin alphabet, X is at once loaded with meaning and on the other hand vacant for possibility. It’s a marker for place but also an independent and indefinable variable. It's the unknown quantity in risk and great art. Though sometimes a marker for censorship or exclusion, X is also film’s potential to express complex subjects in open and ambitious ways.

We encourage film and moving image entries of all types and lengths that offer fresh interpretation of X. Please read through our submissions guidelines and if you think your work explores elements of the above theme, we would love to hear from you!

All single screen works under 20 minutes in length will automatically be eligible for selection in the Festival’s Short Film Awards programme and a £750 prize. Submit before 15 April 2016 and take advantage of Early-Bird submission fee.
