BlackLab are our 2012 Commission Winners!
Back in March we announced a call for proposals for a new and exciting commission for this year’s festival in partnership with North East Photography Network. We received just over 100 proposals in response, and are now pleased to announce that Manchester based photographers BlackLab have been selected to create a new film for the Festival’s 2012 programme.
Corresponding to the theme Pictures in Motion which unites this year’s programme, BlackLab’s film will consider the nostalgic idea of the photographer as recorded in stills, literature, moving images, documentaries and archive footage questioning whether the role of the photographer will become redundant in a society where CCTV and mass observation are becoming the norm.
Throughout the run of the Festival, the work will be screened as an installation at Shoregate Ice House, Berwick-Upon-Tweed, as well a one off screening at The Maltings Theatre & Cinema.
This exciting commission marks the first public announcement and sneak preview into the 2012 event - the Full festival programme will be announced on 17th August.
BlackLab’s Mishka Henner will be giving a talk about his practice and plans for the commission at The Mining Institute, Newcastle 6:30pm on Monday 2nd July 2012. The talk is completely free and there is no need to book a place. Click here for details.
