Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival & Cecilia Stenbom nominated for Journal Culture Awards

Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival and Berwick Visual Arts are delighted to announce that Cecilia Stenbom has been shortlisted for Best Visual Artist at the Journal Culture Awards. Cecilia was artist-in-residence with the two organisations for six months during 2013, producing a short film in Berwick called The Case, which premiered at Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, and which went on to tour to festivals in London, Glasgow and Rotterdam.
Organisers at Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival are also thrilled to have been shortlisted for the Best Event Northumberland category at the awards. The Festival was nominated by the public and shortlisted by an industry panel, in recognition of the cultural impact of last September’s event on Northumberland. At the 2013 Festival 77 new films and moving image installations were presented, attracting 7,891 audiences, many of whom travelled to Berwick especially for the event, and welcomed 40 artists and filmmakers to the town from across Europe.
Festival Director Melanie Iredale said “This news comes as a fantastic recognition of what was a great year for the Festival, and a great dedication to the support of numerous partners, artists, and audiences, locally, nationally and internationally. We’re thrilled to receive this acknowledgement of the impact of the festival we prepare for what will be our tenth anniversary in September 2014.”
Cecilia said on hearing about the nomination “I am delighted to be nominated for the Journal Culture Award as Visual Artist of The Year. 2013 was an amazing year for me professionally, including national and international projects and exposure, one of the absolute highlights was the residency with Berwick Visual Art and Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival that resulted in the moving image work The Case. The subsequent success of that work has led to a string of exciting opportunities and projects that are in store for me for 2014.”
Cecilia Stenbom, Melanie Iredale, Director of Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, and James Lowther, Head of Berwick Visual Arts will all be present at the Journal Culture Awards which takes place at the Sage Gateshead on 16th April.
