Artist Sidsel Christensen shoots new video work against the backdrop of Berwick-upon-Tweed this weekend!

02/08/2013

Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival welcomed artist Sidsel Christensen to Berwick-upon-Tweed today to produce a newly commissioned work for this year’s Festival, North by Northeast, taking place in locations across Berwick-upon-Tweed from Wednesday 25th to Sunday 29th September 2013.

UK-based Norwegian artist Sidsel Christensen will use Berwick’s coastline – and bridges – to create a new landscape work entitled Study for Composition X. The piece involves the artist suspending herself from a height with ropes, performing on a hoop, which frames the landscape through moving image. Study for Composition X is a development of the artist’s previous work, filmed on the west coast of Norway.

Facing out to sea, the artist suspended herself 30 metres from the Royal Tweed Bridge, as part of an ambitious film shoot. For another scene, she suspended herself from a scaffold on a Berwick beach – facing back over to Norway, just as her original video set on the Norwegian coast, faced over to Berwick.

Artist Sidsel Christensen said today “It was a really calm and immersive experience to be hanging in a space, between the sea and the sky, framed by the bridge, where no-one has every been before and probably never will again."

The video works will be presented in the Gymnasium Gallery as part of the Festival, 26th – 29th September.

Study for Composition X has been commissioned by the Festival with the support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy and Arts Council England, in partnership with the NABROAD/ Norwegian Collaborative Organisation for Contemporary Art Abroad and Open Gallery.

Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival

Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival is an international celebration of the art of the moving image, set in the historic border town of Berwick upon Tweed and looking out onto the North Sea. The inaugural Festival took place in September 2005, with a vision to transform Berwick into one big moving image installation – a visual and cultural spectacle – and the celebration has taken place every year since.
