Berwick Film Academy tours to Leeds

02/04/2013

A short film made by Berwick Film Academy was presented as part of Leeds Young People’s Film Festival on Monday.

The film – entitled Maybe Next Time – was created by a group of young filmmakers, all aged 13–18 and from the Berwick area, over a series of weekly workshops and a 3-day shoot last Summer.

Made entirely by young people, Maybe Next Time was created with the support of professional mentors, Writers Block, as part of a project run by Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival and Berwick Youth Project, and funded by the BFI’s First Light initiative, together with support from Community Foundation and the Cooperative Community Membership Foundation.

Maybe Next Time is a mystery thriller set in Berwick-upon-Tweed in which an unknown man tries to uncover events that led to a body washed up on the beach. Hollywood blockbuster director Paul W.S. Anderson reviewed the film as “a great cinematic experience.

Upon finding out that the film was selected for Leeds Young People’s Film Festival, one participant said “totally awesome” while Merrick Thomson, youth worker at Berwick Youth Project said “This is great, our young people are very excited for a new audience to see their film

The film - which made it’s world premiere at Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival in September - was selected to screen at the prestigious Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds, as part of Young Filmmakers Day at Leeds Young People’s Film Festival over Easter.

Festival Director Melanie Iredale said “Leeds Young People’s Film Festival is one of the biggest celebrations of youth filmmaking in the UK, and I think is a huge testament to the young filmmakers behind Maybe Next Time, as well as being a great opportunity for the film to find a wider audience.”

Also screening at Leeds Young People’s Film Festival was the Chris Anderson Award-winning Attack of the Thing from Outer Space, created by young filmmakers as part of the Tyneside Cinema’s Pop Up Cinema project in Newcastle. The short film follows a group of scientists who find a strange artefact in the desert and believe they've made a great discovery - but they don't know what they've got themselves in for!
