The 9th Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival – an international celebration of the art of film – has opened its annual call for entries, and today launches its inaugural Best Short Film Award, sponsored by Inntravel.
Set in the far North of England, and straddling the border with Scotland, the theme for Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival this year is North by Northeast - exploring the region’s historical, industrial and travel links with Northern Europe, and with the North Sea that connects us.
Now in its ninth year, the Festival will once again transform the town of Berwick into one big cinema screen through a programme of film premieres, site-specific installations, and live events in locations across Berwick-upon-Tweed and along the town walls.
Artists and filmmakers are welcome to submit moving image works of all types and lengths, in response to the theme, North by Northeast, for consideration. Further guidelines and details of how to enter can be found at: http://www.berwickfilm-artsfest.com/submit-your-film
Following the success of the introduction of the Early Bird offer last year, entrants can submit their works for only £5 (approx €6) for short films and £15 (€18) for feature films if submitted by 26th April. The final deadline for submissions is 28th June, and the programme will be announced mid-August.
This year, the Festival launches its first ever award for Best Short Film, in which artists and filmmakers will compete for a cash prize of £500 (approx €570), sponsored by Inntravel, and awarded by a Jury on the night. All single screen films that respond to the theme, and are up to 16 minutes in length, will automatically be eligible for selection for the Inntravel Short Film Competition.
Festival Board Member Samm Haillay from Third Films (Better Things, Self Made) said today:
“We’re delighted to be working with Inntravel to launch this great opportunity for artists and filmmakers to compete for £500 towards their next work.”
Steve Jack, Communications Manager at Inntravel said:
“As long-time specialists in self-guided, independent travel, Inntravel are delighted to be supporting Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival this year. We believe there is a strong affinity between independent filmmaking and independent travel, as they enable us – travellers and filmmakers alike – to explore uncharted territory, in our own way and at our own pace. By sponsoring the festival’s inaugural Short Film Competition, we hope to play our part in helping to bring fresh and creative talent to a receptive and independently minded audience. We wish all entrants the very best of luck.”
Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival returns 25th – 29th September 2013.
