Now that the New Year is under way, Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival is pleased to announce the dates of their 2013 edition: Wednesday 25th – Sunday 29th September.
The Festival returns for its ninth edition 25th – 29th September to once again transform the town of Berwick into one big cinema screen through a programme of film premieres, site-specific installations, and live events in locations across Berwick-upon-Tweed and along the town walls.
This year, the Festival will face North by Northeast, exploring Berwick’s Nordic roots, and the region’s historical and cultural links with Northern Europe, together with the North Sea that connects us.
This year’s Festival is set to be our most ambitious and international event to date.
Festival Director Melanie Iredale said today “We’re really looking forward to inviting filmmakers and artists from around the North Sea rim here to Berwick, and we’re especially excited to be commissioning new works especially for Berwick.”
Last year’s programme showcased 50 films across 9 venues and 7 outdoor locations around the town, welcoming 32 professional filmmakers and artists to Berwick from all over the world, including famous filmmaker and critic Mark Cousins, who described the event as “beautifully curated.” The Festival attracted an influx of visitors, with 7,000 admissions altogether – and this year the Festival is set to attract even more.
Since September 2012, one of the Festival’s commissions, A Live Road Movie, by Screen Bandita and The One Ensemble has gone on to tour from Aberdeenshire to London, while another new commission, Photographers, by Miska Henner and David Oates has racked up over 33,000 views online. Meanwhile, I Am Nasrine, a film which received its world premiere at the 2011 edition has been nominated for a BAFTA for debut director Tina Gharavi.
With last year’s Festival resulting in Berwick’s B&B’s “selling out,” Festival organisers recommend visitors to book early. Go to http://berwickfilm-artsfest.com/staying-in-berwick for information on local accommodation, or call Berwick Tourist Information Centre on +44 (0)1289 301 780.
The Festival will open for submissions next month, and the 2013 programme will go live mid-August.
