A Live Road Movie in Super8 and Sound

Sunday 23rd September / 6PM @ The Maltings Henry Travers Studio

Festival Commission

Join us for an audio-visual adventure on the open road – starting in The Maltings and taking you over the border, through Scotland and around the world as part of this live road movie.

Specially commissioned for the Festival, the event teams cinema outlaws Screen Bandita with topsy-turvy quartet The One Ensemble, bringing together analogue film and an acoustic score as part of a newly created cinematic escapade – destination unknown!
Screen Bandita have curated a unique programme of found Super8 film and slide images recovered from junk shops, attics and skips in the street. These abandoned snapshots and records in forgotten formats take us back in time and to lands afar. By carefully selecting celluloid memories created by image-hunters from the past, Screen Bandita rediscover their excursions and bring them into the present to create a surreal and alluring new journey.

The soundtrack will come from The One Ensemble, featuring cello, bass clarinet, guitar, percussion and vocals. Together they will create a score that incorporates traces of Eastern European folk and string-laced chamber psych, combining thrilling playing with compositional elegance to tell tales of voyages and adventures in unfamiliar territories.

Through the whirr and flicker of the projector and a symphony of sound, the event promises a road trip to lost lands – offering an experience that travels further than any regular cinema screening.

We gratefully acknowledge financial support from the PRS for Music Foundation and Arts Council England.
