World Premiere
UK | 2013 | looped

A world premiere of a new, immersive, moving image installation from celebrated North East-based artist Kelly Richardson.

The work depicts a fictitious, future landscape in which the frontier forests have disappeared. Within the sublime, otherwise empty mountainous terrain is what appears to be an explosion of sorts, an electrical looking, stormy, churning dome which is neither expanding nor receding. Rather than destructive, is this ‘Last Frontier’ some kind of bio-dome, an artificially created atmosphere meant for the preservation of life, a kind of last stand?

Created entirely in a computer programme called Terragon, The Last Frontier develops the ideas and technologies that went into Richardson’s recent works, such as Mariner 9.

The Last Frontier – which will be the first in a series of five videos – is being presented in partnership with Visual Arts in Rural Communities (VARC), which funded The Last Frontier through its Artists’ Projects Fund, and installed with support from the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Sustainable Development Fund.

You can see Kelly talk about the work, in relation to the On the Precipice programme, as part of an artist talk on Saturday 28th September at 11am.
